Meta Prevails in FTC Antitrust Lawsuit Over Instagram and WhatsApp Acquisitions
A U.S. District Judge has dismissed the Federal Trade Commission's antitrust lawsuit against Meta Platforms, ruling that the agency failed to prove its case. The lawsuit, filed in December 2020, alleged that Meta maintained a monopoly in the personal social networking market through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.
Judge James Boasberg emphasized the FTC's lack of empirical evidence to counter Meta's argument that competitors like TikTok and YouTube now provide significant market alternatives. "The FTC offers no empirical evidence of substitution whatsoever," Boasberg noted in his memorandum opinion.
The decision underscores the evolving dynamics of the tech industry, where legacy platforms face fierce competition from newer entrants. Meta's victory reinforces its position amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny.
